It’s Official: Toronto’s Honda Indy race cancelled again this year

Toronto, On, May 14/21 (GRW): For a long time now observers have predicted that this year’s Honda Indy Toronto, scheduled for July 11, would be cancelled for a second time. Today, this became official as Toronto extended its shutdown of outdoor events until after Labour Day on September 6.

Of the four annual‘major’ auto racing events in Canada, this adds a third cancellation to the previous two – the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal in June and the IMSA WeatherTech race at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, originally scheduled for July.

As for the fourth ‘major’, the NASCAR Truck Series race scheduled for CTMP on the Labour Day weekend, this event is still on the calendar. Given that CTMP is located well outside the Greater Toronto Area, this latest ruling by Toronto City council does not bear directly on that event. However, there is some sense of ineligibility that this event may also be cancelled as things develop over the summer.

As to whether a substitute event will be added to the calendar, the statement from the INDYCAR organization is, “INDYCAR is considering various scenarios for the remainder of the 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES calendar as it relates to the cancellation of the event on the Streets of Toronto.” It seems most likely that INDYCAR will select one of its already scheduled one-race weekends and make it a doble-header weekend to make up for the loss of the Toronto event. My guess is that they will pick the ‘Gateway; oval at St. Louis which has a race scheduled for Saturday, August 21. This track is close to the Indianapolis base of most of the teams. The only problem might be running the second event of the Sunday.
