Preview: Weekend of June 1-2, 2019: NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA

This week we are watching five races: The IndyCar double header from Belle Isle in Detroit, A pair of NASCAR races from Pocono and the IMSA WeatherTech race from Belle isle on Saturday.

Saturday, June 1
1. IMSA WeatherTech Chevrolet Sports Car Classic, Belle Island, Detroit, MI
• TV: Discovery-Velocity at 12:30P
• Last year’s race was won by Felipe Nasr/Eric Curran in the No. 31 Whelan Cadillac DPi, the two Penske Acura DPi cars were second and third.
• The most recent WeatherTech race was held at Mid-Ohio in early May. The Acura DPi of Dane Cameron/JP Montoya won the race ahead of the Mazda DPi of Oliver Jarvis/Tristan Nunez and the other Mazda of Ryan Hunter Reay/Jonathan Bomarito.

2. NASCAR Xfinity Pocono Green 250, Pocono Raceway
• TV: TSN4 at 1:00P
• The Pocono Xfinity race a year ago was won by Kyle Busch. Another NXS carpetbagger, Chase Elliott, was second while Daniel Hemric was third.
• Tyler Reddick won the most recent NXS race which was run at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Justin Allgaier was second and Jeffrey Earnhardt third.

3. NTT IndyCar Series, Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix - Race 1, Belle Island, Detroit
• TV: NBC/SNWL at 3:00P
• Scott Dixon won the Saturday race here last year. Ryan Hunter Reay was second and Alexander Rossi was third.
• The most recent IndyCar race this year was last week’s Indy 500 which was won by Simon Pagenaud in a close-fought battle over Rossi.
• This race is open only to DPi and GT-Daytona entries (no LMP2 or GTLM cars in this race) which reduces the field to just 23 cars.

Sunday, June 2
4. NASCAR MENCS Pocono 400, Pocono Raceway
• TV: TSN4 at 2:00P
• Here at Pocono last year Martin Truex won the race ahead of Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch.
• Last week at Charlotte, the Coca-Cola 600 was won by Truex. Joey Logano was second and Kyle Busch third.
• There are only 37 entries listed on the preliminary entry list for this event. Given that a maximum of 40 cars are allowed to start this race, everyone who shows up will qualify for the race. (Can you say ‘Start and Park’?)

5. NTT IndyCar Series, Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix - Race 2, Belle Island, Detroit
• TV: NBC/SNWL at 3:00P
• Last year the Sunday race here was won by Ryan Hunter-Reay. Will Power was second and Ed Jones was third.
• The most recent IndyCar race this year was last week’s Indy 500 which was won by Simon Pagenaud in a close-fought battle over Rossi.
• The entry list fo Sunday’s IndyCar race is the same as for Saturday.
