Toronto IndyCar driver and fan favourite Paul Tracy helped kick off Mosport's 50th season at the Canadian Motorsport Expo (CME) last weekend. PT dropped by to sign autographs for fans, did some media interviews and related some of his stories from his days racing at Mosport early in his career. Word is the Thrill from West Hill will likely be back in his hometown behind the wheel of a Honda-powered Dallara come July 16-18 for the Honda Indy Toronto.
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star Matt Kenseth was also on hand to meet fans, sign autographs and talk about the upcoming season which gets underway next month at Daytona. The 2003 Sprint Cup champ was a huge draw for fans, many of whom began lining up to meet the NASCAR star four hours before he went on stage. Kenseth stayed and signed for several hours to ensure no fan went home without and autograph.
In addition to big stars, the CME also featured interactive industry panels that debated and discussed issues facing motorsports. Among these was the alternative fuels panel featuring representatives from both the industry and government. The motorsports community is not immune from global concern for the environment, and many racing leagues have taken a leadership role in developing automotive technologies that will lessen the negative impact on the planet.
