Like him or hate him, Nick Cage will get people talking, likely in a vain effort to try and mimic his half Christopher Walken, half Jerry-Stiller-as-Frank-Costanza method of speaking. Oh, and he’s a bit of a car freak, too, even though he’s been auctioning off his collection of Rolls Royces and Ferraris lately to make ends meet.
But it really doesn’t matter in this case, because as they should in a car movie, the cars steal the show here.
Yes, yes; we all know about Elanor, the ’67 Shelby Mustang GT500—the actual car used in the film was given to Cage after production—but there’s a lot more to it than that. People forget the chase car in the movie’s big chase: a ’97 BMW 540i driven by that great B-moviest, Delroy Lindo. It takes a bit of a thrashing, but it helps complete a great display of inter-continental, V8-powered one-upmanship.

Sure, in his review of the film, the late Roger Ebert bemoaned the lack of a car chase to rival the epicness of the seven minute-long item in the original film, but when Memphis Raines is popping the clutch (actually, Cage is as he did his own driving for the film) and slamming every gear home as he charges up to an Evel Knievel-esque jump over a line of stopped traffic, it all comes together.
